What is being a Christian? What makes one a Christian? These questions have created much dialog within both the secular and religious parts of society for the last 40 years. Since the 1960s and the start of the sexual and Jesus revolutions many have tried to create their own definitions to suit their own personal worlds. However, as truth goes there can only be one that matters. The grey lines of a true Christian inevitable turn white in time.
Being a Christian is being in love with Jesus. Knowing who he is, as the Son of G-d and recognizing what he did on the cross is a start. However, one must also not just recognize but assimilate the values, principals, and precepts of his Father in heaven: who happens to be G-d. He is your G-d weather you want to recognize it or not. We won’t get into that right now. Assimilating the values of G-d in your life is only partly your responsibility and it comes by reading the bible and more specifically hearing it taught while participating in discussion.
Remember every word in the Bible is for your benefit: it was written by men through the Holy Spirit and is as complete and relevant as it was when written. God would have never placed something in his word that faded in relevancy with time. If someone tells you different ignore them. The second way to assimilate the values of G-d is when the Holy Spirit “The Spirit of G-d that comes to teach and counsel” comes and guides your actions through conviction and peace. Once a person has truly from his or her own heart given their lives to Jesus the Holy Spirit will come into ones life and start the process. However, it is important to understand that the Lord G-d and his Son know the difference between an honest and repentant heart and one that cares more about tradition, vanity, position, status, and what ever else drives a man to ask Jesus to forgive them out of something other than a true heart change.
Two men may kneel at the same alter and utter the same prayer to the Lord Jesus and as both rise one may be going to Heaven and the other to Hell. Being in love with Jesus is being willing to throw everything in your life away for his will and a true Christian is generally wiling to do this. Believe it or not a great number, if not the majority, of pastors in the United States are not willing to do this because they have built within their own churches great mechanisms by which to enrich themselves and their children while calling it “Living The Kingdom Life”. I will cover this in another short article at some other time.
A person is made a Christian by noting they do except surrendering. Hear me, nothing you do can make you a Christian other than surrendering to G-d. You get to heaven by the mercy and grace of the Lord G-d alone. When you accept his Son Jesus as your Lord and Savior and truly mean it in your heart and you change your life style you will go to heaven. At that point the only thing you need to do is find a group of believers either in a church or a small group.
The Holy Sprit will also help guide you. Being a Christian is not easy, the enemy wants you back and will cause you to fail many times and you will wonder if you are truly saved. Remember only God can save you: he loves you so much that he will not give you up lightly, if at all. Remember this most of all. There will be ups and downs in a Christian’s life, but a true Christian will always come back and repent if he has sinned because the Holy Spirit will convict him daily until he does: trust me. This is another way to determine if you are save or not. If you sin continually after you have given your life to G-d and you have no strong conviction to repent and ask G-d for forgiveness you may not be saved. The Holy Spirit is not just a name in a fictional book, but a true person whose actions can be measured and sensed.
Always remember being a Christian is not complicated nor is it confusing, it is G-d’s perfect way at bringing his children home.
