While plenty of former administrations have run roughshod over The United States Constitution, the Rule Book for how our great nation is to be governed, the current governing regime seems hell bent on abandoning it all together. The separation of powers into three equal branches of government (the checks and balances) has seen an Executive exercising unbridled power without the mechanisms of oversight and confirmation. The Legislative now consists of a majority of like-minded individuals or Seat holders too weak and meek to offer resistance for fear of political backlash from the Party of power. The Judicial is very soon to be a majority of individuals who believe Policy is rightfully made from the bench rather than interpretation of legislative actions. Think about it…that is quite some “Change” if you believe our Founders knew what they were talking when they drew up the road map for governance that has served our great nation for over 200 years.
Let us look at the incrementalist approach the current ruling regime has successfully utilized over the past several decades to arrive at our present situation. The American Dream used to mean that an individual could work very hard, be inventive, and utilize means that was able to be legally gathered and make a profit without fear of that profit being taken to redistribute to those either less fortunate or less industrious. No one has ever claimed that Capitalism was perfect, but, history shows it is quite effective at producing and sustaining huge economies over long periods of time, which brings us to the next issue of policy evolution.
The American economic machine has always been undergirded by the notion of laissez - faire capitalism. The current regime is on record as stating that the foundations of the American economy must be torn down and restructured. This is one of the most asinine proposals in the history of modern civilized society. The fact that there exists a somewhat universal consensus relative to the notion of American exceptionalism is rooted in the ideals and products that have resulted from unhindered American ingenuity, hard work, and enterprise. Not from centrally planned mechanisms that are historically proven to stifle real and sustainable economic growth. Economic growth under capitalist principles is not a continuous upward graphic. History, theory and practice bears out the fact that economies adhering to capitalist principles will always have peaks and valleys, with periods of growth far outpacing periods of decline. This is “Change” that leads us into territory alien to our uniquely American character, purpose, intent and historical make-up.
An American foreign policy constant has been initiatives relative to the promotion of human rights, democracy and individual liberties around the globe. The current “crisis” in Iran over the legitimacy of the “landslide” election of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad reveals, simultaneously, an inconsistency and a consistency within our current ruling regime here in America. The constant drum roll of “Change” is loudly heard. Instead of the United States supporting freedom wanting individuals in a time of need, we hear silence from our leaders. No longer does America feel the need to support democratic reform and expressions of individual freedom in oppressed lands.
The inconsistency is the administrations stated policy of “never let a good crisis go to waste” (Timothy Geitner ring a bell). There is no more relevant crisis than that which is occurring in Iran right now. Now is the time to act to affect some positive degree of change within an oppressive government that repeatedly calls for our destruction as well as the total annihilation of Israel. The only assumption to be made from this is that crises in America are the only opportunities worth taking advantage of because it is these crises that allow for the expansion and power maintenance of the central governing body, thus serving their interests alone. Crises abroad (Iran, N. Korea, Russian re-emergence, Chinese expansion of its sphere of influence) do not serve the desires and interests of our current administration, leaving an unrecognizable space of emptiness for the oppressed peoples of the world to turn to.
No longer will the United States, in its present form, be trusted to buttress a people’s call for help in their quest for the God given rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This is “Change” the entire planet can do without. The “Change” we are witnessing everyday is altering the geopolitical landscape of the world we live in such a way that the consequences will most likely produce lesser freedoms and greater violence for those less fortunate than ourselves around the globe.
It is imperative for America to alter its present course of destructive “Change” and restore American ideals, attitudes, and principles, not only for the sake of our Great nation herself, but for the world as a whole. Free and fair competitive principles of capitalism are tried, true, and proven methods to produce the most effective machinations of economic growth. Removing governments’ greedy hand from free enterprise is essential. Fostering and protecting individual life, liberty, property, and personal responsibility returns American society to a more equal footing throughout where individual prosperity can endure and thrive without threat or fear of government intervention. The American “Can Do” attitude is alive and well, it is just being muzzled. It is this attitude that has been responsible for many of mankind’s greatest achievements. The American belief that all of mankind possesses certain unalienable rights provides strength and support to our citizens at home and to subjugated peoples around the world. Restore America to the state our Founders intended. Restore America to her deserving and rightful place as one of history greatest and lasting achievements. We were not broken; however, the regularity of “Change” is breaking us. God Bless America!
